We purchased this gate and the smaller/regular version of this gate from the same brand, Regalo. This brand needs an additional 4" of height (beyond the gate height) for installation. Two inches are required at the top and 2" at the bottom. It would be good if this brand mentioned on the outside of the box the railing height required for installation. We originally purchased the taller gate for the top of our stairs. Our banister is 37+" tall. The tall Regalo gate is 36" tall. However, with the additional height needed for the installation attachments, 40" is required for installation. Thankfully we were able to install the taller gate at the bottom of the stairs, which will work better for opening the gate when coming down the stairs. We will use now use the shorter/regular height gate at the top of our stairs.
The gate is a nightmare. The spring pops off constantly allowing the door to be completely removed every time you open it & not on purpose. Bear in mind if you’re holding a small child putting it back together one handed is not an option.

I liked this gate but it broke after only a year of use. Not durable enough for everyday use in a main doorway .
We needed a sturdy gate to contain our dog in part of the house. This was the right answer. We had the tension gates previously and were constantly tripping over the bar under the gate. This one stays shut when needed, and swings freely in both directions. It was easy to install.
Had this gate at the bottom of our basement stairs for only 1-2 months and the top swivel part attached to the gate broke off. Was going to attempt to try and fix it somehow but my oldest ended up going downstairs without help of opening the gate and the bottom piece broke because it was the only part holding the gate. Was satisfied with product until all this happened.

First off, the gate broke after only 4 months of use. Part of the hinge broke and the gate is unusable. It’s also quite clunky and loud (wakes up the baby in the closest room even if you’re careful). It gets 0 style points. We bought it because it was inexpensive, in stock and seemed to do the trick, but now I need to find a replacement quickly since the stairs are otherwise unprotected.
