I hated using the regular thermometers under my daughters armpit. They always took too long to load and she would always get fussy when I tried to do it. The Kinsa takes less than a second to read so she doesn't mind it and I love how simple and easy it is to use! I love how you don't have to buy probe covers for it and the app is super convenient. The only thing is the cap is really hard to take off, at least mine is. Overall amazing product and worth the money!
This thermometer is horrible. It does not take accurate temps. My 14 month old is clearly running a fever but this thermometer is telling me her temp is 96.4. She is HOT to the touch and shivering. Do not buy!
Thank you for your feedback and we're so sorry about these low readings. When a reading is as low as 96.4ºF this is very likely due to dust or debris blocking the sensor. It could also be technique (see kinsa.help/SmartEarTechnique) since ear thermometers take readings instantly and infant ear canals can be very small and curved making it difficult for any ear thermometer to get the line of sight needed for good readings. For infants, we recommend using a Kinsa QuickCare wireless stick thermometer instead - they're more accurate, less reliant on technique, and much better for infants and toddlers. Please get in touch with us at kinsa.help/ContactUs and we'll do whatever it takes to make this right.

I had high hopes for this but there are several things I don't love about it. 1) it includes no ear covers and so it doesn't seem very sanitary. 2) The ear thingy seems too big to use for a small child, definitely not for an infant, and 3) No matter who we try this on or what time of day, it seems to always read 97.7 We didn't even bother with the app yet..couldn't get past the shortcomings of the product itself. And of course, because I bought this as a baby shower gift for my daughter and she didn't try it until after the baby was born (incidentally this would never work on a baby), it is too late to return it. I would use a LOT of caution buying anything from BB&B for a gift unless its from a registry (and their registry process is super glitchy). Sorry, usually love BB&B but just being honest in my review.
Hey There,
We're so sorry to hear about the issues you have had with your Smart Ear but we wanted to provide some information that might help.
Since all ear thermometers take readings instantly, they rely on three things to get accurate readings: a clean sensor, a direct line of sight to the ear canal, and good technique. Please review these articles to see if we can resolve this issue for you.

Next you mentioned it being difficult for a small child, and we can see this being an issue since the Smart Ear needs a direct line of sight of the child's ear canal without any debris. You also mentioned using ear covers, since our thermometers don't use ear covers, we recommend cleaning the Smart Ear after every use to help avoid earwax buildup on the sensor, which could lead to inaccurate temperature readings as well.

I bought this one when I first had my baby. I measured his ear. It was 103F. I told the doctor. He said it is more accurate to measure the baby’s armpit at home. It turned out measuring the temperature at armpit is more accurate than measuring in the ears.

Hey Jane,
We're so sorry to hear about your accuracy issues with your Smart Ear. Since you mentioned you were using this on your baby, the Smart Ear might not be the best thermometer for readings for new borns. Since all ear canals are different and the Smart Ear requires a straight line of site, getting this type of reading on a baby can be difficult. If you are interested in getting our Kinsa QuickCare, which allows for oral, underarm, and rectal (recommended best reading for newborns) please reach out to us directly and mention this review and we can help provide a replacement.

I usually don’t write reviews but this is by far one of the most unreliable and inaccurate thermometers I’ve ever owned. My kids had fevered of 103.6-105.2 for 1-2 weeks straight and every-time I tried this thermometer it read 98.5-98.9.

And the last article I wanted to share goes over how to clean the device. Sometimes the tip of the sensor can have debris or earwax to interfere with it, which can cause inaccurate readings.

We purchased this Thermometer right before our baby was born & it absolutely does not give the correct temperature. It’s off by 2 or 3 degrees each time we’ve tried it. A piece of junk we paid full price for & wish we could have the money back to repurchase one that works for our family. Do not buy this!

It was frustrating to use it when was needed. Not so easy. Baby hated it in the ear. Plus nothing like a rectal temp to truly see if baby has fever (and he actually was fine with rectal temps). So far a waste of money.

Hello Customer,
We're so sorry to hear about the frustration with using the Kinsa Smart Ear. Rest assured, we want to help make things right and provide some help that might resolve the issue. Since it sounds like you are using it on your baby, we actually agree and recommend rectal readings when handling an infant. Since ear canals are all different shapes, it does require more technique to get the reading correctly, so it makes sense that it was difficult to get a reading your baby.

Before I got a chance to try Kinsa ear thermometer, I was always loyal to other brand that is also ear thermometer. However, I got this thermometer to test out from Stellar Product Testing Panel and I must say that I haven’t heard about it before this opportunity but I am very glad I did. I was always wondering how to track all temperatures of my kid when she has fever. The other one I was using could only memorize some but didn’t know whose was it when I look back at it. Now, that I had a baby, having two kids is even harder to remember all. The best feature of this one and why it stands out from all other brands is the ability to track everything in one place (no matter is it your kids or grown ups) and also, once set and connected, it sends you reminders when to give medicine to them, when to go to the doctor. It also asks you if your kid/s have symptoms and then mentions some of them. It is very helpful to a parent (especially new one) when you don’t know what symptoms to look for when your kid is sick and tells you what to look for. My kids loved that they could choose a character for their name and it literally takes a second to get the correct reading (comparing to other brands where it takes lot longer) and with wiggly baby like mine, this comes as a lifesaver. The process of setting the app is easy and it takes seconds. I would just love for them to add code to scan on the paper it comes with so people can just scan quickly the code and it takes them to download the app immediately instead of searching for it in the app store. I tested this one on both ears and in intervals of a minute to see if I’m going to get the same readings because with other brands, this type of thing tends to give you different readings (which is common for each ear but after just a minute, it should not be that much of a difference) and Kinsa thermometer performed the best. I am glad it was used in this pandemic to help with detecting hot spots of virus and now I know why a lot of people trusted KINSA for this job. Hats down for an amazing thermometer and being able to connect it through Bluetooth to your phone. Amazing!

The Kinsa Smart Ear Thermometer works great and is easy to use. Ear thermometers usually give you a more accurate reading than the no-contact thermometers. This one is great on its own but I love using the app. You download it and it immediately picks up your thermometer as long as it is turned on. The thermometer uses Bluetooth and you can set a profile for every member in your family and it will record their temperature. This is so convenient especially when you have more than one kid that is sick , you don’t have to write it down or try to remember what kid had which temperature. I’ve used a past Kinsa ear thermometer and this one is more convenient because you just press the button once instead of holding it down to get the temperature. We use this thermometer every day for our kids to make sure they don’t have a temperature before they go to school or other activities where they will have a temperature check to make sure before we send them. The readings are accurate from what I can tell. We have a no-contact thermometer that says the same 97.7 temperature for every person who uses it but the Kinsa gives a different temperature for each kid so I know it’s working. There are no special covers you need to buy. This one you just use and clean. It has a probe cap for storage. It comes with batteries so you don’t have to worry about those and it even tells you your battery level so you know when to replace. I was given this ear thermometer to try as part of the Stellar Product Testing Panel.
